This biblical still-life composition features a broken African calabash, inspired by one of Jesus' parables - Luke 5:37; it highlights the implication of putting a new active fluid - new wine, in an old vessel - old wineskin, the vessel gets broken, and the fluid is lost.
Like in most parables, Jesus uses a relatable parallel to help us understand profound spiritual truth; the old vessel symbolizes old ordinances, rites, and actions and new wine symbolizes a new mindset, spiritual enlightenment, and progress. Thus adopting a new mindset and holding onto old habits and actions is always futile and leads to failure. Just like accepting the Grace of God and Christs' redemption of sin but holding unto the law, religious rites and salvation through human effort or acquiring a glass house and insisting on throwing stones.
