For seven years, the Jonathan Whines Jazz Quartet has been serving free jazz from a Harris and Hoole coffee shop in Twickenham. We play every Friday fortnight from 10.30 am to 13.00.
I grew up listening to Jazz and studied Jazz drums and percussion at Music School in London, and I got tired of hiding what I could do for the community.
Trapped glory itching to be manifested.
Holding it back is one of the causes of depression.
One morning I heard the sound of Jonathan’s horn and followed it to its source. What!! Free Live Jazz?
I bought a coffee and played along in my head as they had no drummer. He knew what I was doing, and after the gig, we shook hands, and that was the last gig they did as a trio. What a privilege it is to perform with these geniuses.
We have some very committed followers ranging from 6 months old to 90 years old. And some of them tell us the gig is the highlight of their week. We have had incredible things happen as we serve the outliers who don’t fit into the 9 to 5 working world. We have done some lucrative private Island gigs and other functions as a result.
We were approached this morning by media personnel for an exciting project.
